Historic Preservation Series

What happens when nearly two centuries of local government history needs to be organized, preserved, and made accessible to the public?

Join The Indianapolis Propylaeum for the next installment of our Historic Preservation Series featuring Jordan Ryan, Administrator for Public Records and City-County Archivist for the City of Indianapolis and Marion County.

In late 2023, the City of Indianapolis’ Office of Finance & Management established the new City-County Archives—a monumental undertaking focused on preserving and managing approximately 180 years of public records. Ryan was tasked with building this new archives and records center from the ground up while navigating the complexities of local government materials, historical preservation, digital access, and public accountability.

During this virtual presentation, Ryan will share insights into:

  • The creation and mission of the City-County Archives

  • Newly accessible collections and research opportunities

  • Special preservation and records management projects

  • Cemetery compliance and management efforts

  • Expanding digital resources for the public

This conversation offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the work of preserving Indianapolis history while making civic records more accessible for future generations.

Whether you are passionate about local history, archives, genealogy, public policy, or historic preservation, this program provides a unique perspective on the stewardship of our community’s collective memory.
