Oldenburg Indiana is a picturesque, historic town in Franklin County, Indiana. It was founded in 1837 as a German Catholic town and named by the founders who came from the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg in northwestern Germany. The town, dubbed the Village of Spires, has a striking skyline featuring the spires of the parish church, convent chapel, convent, friary (onion dome), and the town hall. The Gehring brickyard produced bricks from 1858 to 1908 for the religious buildings as well as for houses, commercial buildings, walls, industrial buildings, a barn, and sidewalks. Other buildings are built of limestone and half-timber construction. The town was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
