"Swing State" Jazz Program Planned

“Swing States: Harmony in the Battleground States” is a new jazz album featuring Grammy Award winning artist Regina Carter. The project combines quintessential American music with the importance of voting and voting rights. Carter, along with musician and producer Kabir Sehgal and John Deversa will present a live online program with the Propylaeum on October 29 at 7 p.m. The evening will feature performances from the album as well as a discussion and Q & A. Welcome Prop Intern

Sydney Shopp is a junior at Ball State University studying travel and tourism, entrepreneurship, and Spanish. She loves photography and has her own business, Local to Wander Photography, that specializes in weddings, elopements, and portrait photography. Sydney loves to travel and is always planning her next trip. She just adopted a puppy and he’s the cutest thing in the world. Sydney is very adventurous and she loves to explore new places. Sydney always stays busy working on new projects, like podcasting or is hanging out with family and friends. She is the biggest people person and very outgoing. Sydney is so excited to be interning with us this semester!

Suffrage Wrap-Up

The Prop has had a banner year in the commemoration of the passage of the 19th Amendment. We have focused on the history of the suffrage movement, but have also discussed the continuing women’s movement, and what it means for voting rights today. At a combination in-person and virtual celebration, President Rose Wernicke began the recap of events with, “I am struck by the fact that the Prop was made for this!” Wernicke applauded the efforts, saying, “I am proud of how the members, staff and partners have come together to plan such a range of quality programs and activities. Propylaeum Awarded Indiana DHPA Grant

The Propylaeum has been awarded a grant from the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology for restoration of the masonry on the carriage house. The project will entail tuckpointing of the masonry and replacement of deteriorated brick. The masonry conditions on the carriage house resulted in water infiltration which has damaged the interior of the carriage house. The only one remaining of its kind in the Old Northside Neighborhood, the carriage house tells an additional story of the property, including the Victorian horse and carriage days, the switch to automobiles, the early Children’s Museum, and the space for artist studios.
