HER Flag at the Prop

On Thursday, March 19th the Indianapolis Propylaeum has the distinct honor of hosting Her Flag, a national art and travel project commemorating the centennial of the ratification of the 19th amendment. Artist Marilyn Artus is traveling the path of ratification through the capital cities of the 36 states that ratified the 19th Amendment. Artus is collaborating with a woman artist from each of the 36 states that ratified the 19th Amendment into law to create a giant 18 x 26 foot flag. The culmination will be a new flag sewn as a thank you and a love letter to the states that ratified the 19th Amendment into law. The Propylaeum has been selected to be the location for the sewing of the 26th section of the flag.

Artus is collaborating with a female artist and performer in all 36 states starting in June 2019 and ending in August 2020. Each artist has created a stripe that will be stitched in to the flag onsite in their capital city with Artus. The Indiana section was created by Bonnie Fillenwarth. Fillenwarth graduated from Herron School of Art in 2009 with a major in painting and a minor in classical studies. Her work often revolves around history, mythology, archeology, and women’s history. Her current body of work celebrates women throughout history.

The program at the Propylaeum will include details of the nationwide project, Indiana’s role in the suffrage movement, and a local artist to perform while Artus sews the 26th strip into the growing flag live. Once complete, we will convene outside for an unveiling of the flag so far. The event is scheduled to begin at 10:30am and last one hour. Lunch service will be available at the Café at the Prop at the conclusion of the event.
