Mays-Medley Opens Series

October 17th marked the first speaker in our Marilyn K. Glick Women's Enrichment Series for the 2019-2020 season. Carolene Mays-Medley, current Executive Director of White River State Park Development Commission, gave a moving and engaging talk describing both her personal and professional journies. Her emphasis was on highlighting the "bumps" in the road she had experienced and how they ultimately led her to where she is today. Her talk began with quoting one of her favorite songs, "Bump in the Road" by Jonny Lang.
Mays-Medley briefly outlined her long and diverse resume. She has not only served on the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, led the Indianapolis Recorder as editor and publisher hosted Community Link on WISHTV, and worked at her family's company Mays Chemical Company but was also elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 2002 for three terms. While her expansive career was certainly a compelling portion of her talk, it was her personal trials that resounded with the audience, including her recovery from a level five brain aneurysm.
Coming full circle, she wrapped up by talking about how her faith and family ultimately helped her overcome all those bumps in the road she has experienced and again quoted parts of the song by Jonny Lang. Next up for Mays-Medley is a book telling the story of her life and continued work on expanding the White River State Park to make Indianapolis even better.
