A public dedication ceremony for an Indiana state historical marker commemorating renowned women’s suffrage leader May Wright Sewall is scheduled for Friday, October 4, 2019. The marker dedication will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Plaza, along the south side of E. North St. between Meridian St. and Pennsylvania St. Metered parking is available along the streets nearby.

The text follows for the state marker entitled “May Wright Sewall, 1844-1920”:  After moving to Indianapolis in 1874, Sewall gained renown as an educator, proponent of the arts, and women’s suffrage leader. She co-founded many institutions and civic clubs to promote equality for women, including the Indianapolis Propylaeum, located nearby from 1891-1923. During WWI, it served as a center for Red Cross drives and military service members’ recreation. Sewall promoted women’s suffrage through her lectures, writings, and organizational leadership. She helped establish the Indianapolis Equal Suffrage Society in 1878 and the International Council of Women in 1888. In later years, she advocated for international peace. Sewall died one month before ratification of the 19th Amendment, which secured women’s suffrage.

State historical markers commemorate significant individuals, organizations, places, and events in Indiana history. These markers help communities throughout the state promote, preserve, and present their history for the education and enjoyment of residents and tourists of all ages. For over 100 years, the Indiana Historical Bureau has been marking Indiana history. Since 1946, the marker format has been the large roadside marker, which has the familiar dark blue background with gold lettering and the outline of the state of Indiana at the top. Over 670 of these markers have been installed over the years. This marker was made possible thanks to the IU Office of the Bicentennial and the Indiana War Memorials Commission.
