Honoring Significant Women

The centennial of women’s suffrage in 2020, commemorating the most significant event for gender equality to date in the U.S., gives the Indianapolis Propylaeum an unprecedented opportunity to highlight inspirational women: the ones who have made a difference in the past and those who continue to make a difference today. I am writing today with two ways to honor those who have inspired you and to tell their and your stories.

We once again offer you the opportunity to honor significant women in the Propylaeum’s Suffrage Centennial program. The written program will be used across all programs and events from the fall of 2019 through the end of 2020. Our schedule of events includes not just the May Wright Sewall Leadership Event and the Marilyn K. Glick Women’s Enrichment Series, but also author events, the Women’s History Tea, a Spirit & Place program, and a suffrage tree at the Festival of Trees.

For $100 each, you can honor the women who have made an impact on your life. Think about women whose influence is both obvious and direct, but also consider those whose inspiring-effect may be behind the scenes and closer to home. Think about the women whose existence changed your history.

Throughout 2020 we will also spend time considering the lives of women: their stories, motivations, and impact, from the turn of the 20th century through the turn of the 21st century. We will be collecting the personal tales of women who shaped the movement toward rights and equality . The narratives may be written or recorded and may be included on our website, in our newsletter, and at our suffrage events. If you are interested in sharing your story, with acknowledgement or anonymously, please contact LaurieAnne Wickens for more information.

As we prepare our 2020 suffrage commemoration, we are excited to honor the women in your life by acknowledging their existence, bringing their histories to the forefront, and raising them up in admiration.
