The Greek word Propylae means gateway. When used by The Propylaeum, it means gateway to culture.
The Indianapolis Propylaeum was founded by May Wright Sewall in 1888 as a social
and cultural center for Indianapolis women.
On January 21, 1891,800 guests attended the opening and dedication of
the Propylaeum on North between Meridian and Pennsylvania streets.
In 1924,
The Propylaeum purchased and moved to it's current location 1410 N. Delaware street.
The Propylaeum is the oldest private club owned and operated by and for women.

met at The Propylaeum are:

- Fortnightly Literary Club
- Portfolio Club
- Cornelia Cole Fairbanks DAR Chapter
- Matinee Musicale
- Indianapolis Council of Women
Viewing
Throughout its history May Wright Sewall was instrumental in the founding of many civic, literary, musical, art and patriotic clubs. It has also actively promoted programs of educational interests within the community. Our membership has included many Indianapolis women of stature and influence who added their strength to a growing cultural emphasis within our city.
